The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has intercepted a smuggling attempt involving 1,643 boxes of undeclared goods during a recent operation.
The shipment, falsely declared as carrying shoe soles, glue, and shoe heels, was instead found to consist of undeclared shoes and slippers.
ZRA Corporate Communications Manager, Oliver Nzala, says upon physical inspection, the authorities uncovered 1,295 boxes of slippers and 348 boxes of shoes equivalent to 46,620 pairs of slippers and 8,280 pairs of shoes being illicitly transported.
“The smuggling attempt, orchestrated by Dronewave investments limited, would have resulted in a revenue loss of K215,000 to government,” said Mr. Nzala in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Mr. Nzala has therefore issued a stern warning to importers and customs agents engaging in such fraudulent activities, cautioning that perpetrators will face severe consequences, including heavy fines, license revocation, and potential prosecution.
He said that ZRA officers will continue to maintain heightened vigilance to combat smuggling and tax fraud as part of efforts to enhance compliance and safeguard public revenue.
