President Hakainde Hichilema says Zambia and China are close to reaching a consensus on the upgrading of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority TAZARA.
Zambia and Tanzania have in the recent years been in negotiations with the Chinese government on the modernization and upgrade of TAZARA.
Speaking during the China Zambia High Quality Development Forum in Lusaka today, Mr. Hichilema said that the upgrade of TAZARA will increase trade in the region by moving the transportation of heavy cargo from road to rail.
“A deal with China is almost done and it will be a game changer in the transportation of goods in southern Africa,” said Mr. Hichilema.
And Mr. Hichilema thanked the Chinese government for the role it played in the debt restructuring program.
He has therefore urged the Chinese government to continue supporting Zambia in its economic recovery agenda.
