Opposition Socialist Party Leader Fred M’membe has urged government to update the nation on the operational status of Konkola Copper Mines KCM.
Government last year handed KCM to Vedanta Resources Limited, on an understanding that Vedanta will recapitalise the mine and begin operations before the end of the year.
But Dr. M’membe has expressed concern with the delayed operations at KCM, saying that the full operationalization of KCM is beneficial to the economy.
“Instead, Vedanta has been massively laying off employees due to diminishing operations, and this has led to high levels of job losses and suffering in Chingola,” said Dr. M’membe in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
He said that government must be aggressive on Vedanta to ensure operations resume at KCM earliest.
