The Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ), has expressed concern with the arrest of an intern Medical Doctor who allegedly raped a patient under his care at Maina Soko Medical Centre.
HPCZ Manager Public Relations, Terry Musonda, said that the intern Medical Doctor in question is registered with HPCZ, adding that should the said health practitioner be found wanting, HPCZ shall take necessary action.
Mr. Musonda said the incident, if proven, not only undermines public trust and confidence in the medical profession, but also instils fear among patients from seeking and trusting healthcare services in Zambia’s health facilities.
“HPCZ however commends the swift response of the Ministry of Defence and the management at Maina Soko Medical Centre in cooperating with the Zambia Police Service to ensure a thorough investigation and possible prosecution”, said Mr. Musonda in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
He said that the case will be followed in line with its mandate of promoting and upholding set standards in the delivery of healthcare services.
