A Lusaka based parent identified as Bridget Chitunta has called on parents and guardians to embrace and support children with disabilities without discrimination, emphasizing their right to survival, development, and dignity within their communities.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mrs. Chitunta stressed that accepting and nurturing children with disabilities helps promote their rights and ensures their best interests are protected, while also aligning with God’s will.
She expressed concern over a growing trend where some fathers distance themselves from the responsibility of raising a child with a disability, often blaming the mother for the child’s condition.
“Most of the time, when a woman gives birth to a child with Down syndrome or any form of disability, the man abandons the situation, placing blame on the woman. This should not be the case, parenting is a shared responsibility, especially when it comes to supporting children with special needs,” said Mrs. Chitunta.
She further emphasized that children with disabilities are human beings who deserve equal love, care, and opportunity like any other child.
