Speaker of National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, has arrived in Sydney, Australia, to participate in the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), taking place from 3rd to 8 November, 2024.
The conference, hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), promises to be a significant platform for addressing the evolving role of democratic institutions within the Commonwealth under the theme, “Engage, Empower, Sustain: Charting the Course for Resilient Democracy”.
According to a statement issued by First Secretary – Press and Public Relations- Zambia High Commission to Australia and New Zealand, Charles Mucholo, the conference will explore strategies to strengthen democratic frameworks and empower member states to tackle contemporary global challenges.
“Upon arrival on Saturday, Ms. Mutti and her delegation were warmly received by Zambia’s High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand, Dr. Elias Munshya,” said Mr. Mucholo in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Mr. Mucholo said a highlight of this year’s conference will be the election of the CPA Chairperson of the Executive Committee – the Association’s highest elected position.
He said Zambia’s candidate, Dr. Christopher Kalila, will contend for the prestigious role alongside Hon. Arthur Holder, Speaker of Barbados, and Dr. Zainab Gimba, Member of the House of Representatives of Nigeria.
“The critical vote is scheduled for Thursday during the General Assembly,” said Mr. Mucholo.
Mr. Mucholo said this participation underscores Zambia’s commitment to championing democratic values on the global stage, positioning the nation as a vital voice in the Commonwealth’s collective journey toward resilience and sustainability.
