MPIKA WOMAN SHOT USING HOMEMADE GUN

A 42 year old woman identified as, Maureen Mwenya, of Shanghai Village in Mpika District is nursing serious injuries after being shot by unknown assailants using a homemade gun.

Zambia Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, says the victim sustained multiple bullet wounds on the left arm, which was fractured, as well as injuries to the left side of her face and her back.

Mr. Hamoonga said that preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred at approximately 19:00 hours while the victim was with her friend, Mulubwa Kapamba, at a shop in Shanghai Market.

“As Mulubwa Kapamba was locking up the shop, she heard a gunshot and upon turning, she found the victim bleeding profusely and screaming in pain,” said Mr. Hamoonga in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He said that members of the public assisted in rushing the victim to Michael Chilufya Sata Hospital, where she is receiving medical attention and remains in significant pain.

And Mr. Hamoonga said that officers from Mpika police Station visited the scene at Shanghai Market and recovered a homemade rifle, plastic cartridge, and a cocking pin, adding that the items have been secured as exhibits.

He has therefore appealed to members of the public with information that could assist in identifying the assailants to report at the nearest police station.
