MEDIA URGED TO MOVE QUICKLY AND SELF REGULATE

“The longer media in Zambia delays to implement self regulation, the louder voices calling on gov’t to regulate the media are getting,” Minister of Information and Media Cornelius Mweetwa has said.

Mr. Mweetwa, who is also Chief Government Spokesperson, said this when he met a delegation from Media Institute of Southern Africa, MISA Zambia, in Lusaka today.

He said there is need for the media in Zambia to  subscribe to one body so that they enforce common standard to measure good behaviour and professionalism.

Mr. Mweetwa said government is not interested in regulating the media but that the media should move quickly and respond to calls to self regulate.

He said there is need to unify the ethics for the media professionals, especially at a time when more and more media houses are opening up.
