MAN DIES AT CHECKPOINT IN RTA 

A man identified as, Jonas Chola, aged between 30 and 35 years has died after a vehicle hit him at Makeni Checkpoint in Lusaka.

Zambia Police Public Relations officer Rae Hamoonga says the incident happened on 30,September, 2024 at approximately 00:05 hours at Makeni Checkpoint along Mumbwa Road.

Mr. Hamoonga explained that Mr. Chola was riding a Zam Speed motorbike with registration number CAE 9517, travelling from west to east.

“Upon reaching the Makeni Checkpoint, he was stopped by officers for interrogation due to the absence of a helmet and non-functional tail lights on his motorbike,” said Mr. Hamoonga in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He said that while the officers were interrogating him, a Toyota Surf, travelling in the same direction hit Mr. Chola, leading to him sustaining fatal injuries and dying on the spot.

Mr. Hamoonga said that the driver of the Toyota Surf, identified as  Brain Mtonga, 43, of West View area, sustained significant damage, including a shattered front windscreen, damaged right side-view mirror, right fender, right headlamp, right side of the bonnet, and right rear door window.

He said that preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred due to excessive speed by the driver of the Toyota Surf.

Mr. Hamoonga said that the body of the deceased was transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary, where it awaited postmortem examination, saying that burial is scheduled to take place today.

He has therefore reminded all road users to adhere to traffic regulations, including the use of helmets and maintaining vehicle safety standards, to prevent such unfortunate incidents.
