The Governance and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has raised concerns over the European Union Observer Mission’s announcement that it will investigate the withdrawal of candidates from the August polls.
GODAZA Executive Director, Elias Mulenga, says while international observers have a role, their focus should remain strictly impartial and avoid interfering in domestic political dynamics.
Mr. Mulenga said that the decision to investigate withdrawals risks being perceived as selective and could undermine confidence in the neutrality of the mission.
He observed that Zambia’s legal framework already provides mechanisms for candidate withdrawal, and these must be respected.
“Civil society organisations are better placed to engage communities and understand the local context behind such decisions”, said Mr. Mulenga in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
He highlighted that international observers should instead prioritise monitoring transparency, fairness, and peaceful conduct rather than probing internal party matters.
Mr. Mulenga said that citizens must not be left with the impression that external actors are dictating the electoral process.
He affirmed that GODAZA supports impartial observation but rejects any approach that appears intrusive or politically motivated.
Mr. Mulenga emphasised that collaboration should be based on respect for Zambia’s sovereignty and democratic institutions.
