Opposition Economic Freedom Fighters EFF President, Kasonde Mwenda, says he stands in solidarity with the miners of Mopani Mine, who have been subjected to injustices following the takeover by International Holdings Resources IHR.
In December 2023, government announced IHR as the new investor of Mopani Copper Mine with an expected investment of $1.1 billion.
Mr. Mwenda said the takeover has not only failed to secure the miners’ rightful benefits, but has also plunged their financial security into uncertainty.
“The miners are still waiting for their three long years benefits they are entitled to under the labor laws,” said Mr. Mwenda in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Mr. Mwenda has therefore demanded the state and IHR to immediately disburse the overdue payments to the miners.
He said the future of the miners’ pension contributions hangs in the balance.
