CEJ CALLS FOR EFFECTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL LITIGATION IN ZAMBIA

The Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) Executive Director, Maggie Mwape, has called for the urgent need for effective environmental litigation to address the impacts of pollution and degradation in Zambia.

Commenting on “Environmental Litigation for Nature Crimes in Zambia: Challenges and Opportunities,” Ms. Mwape outlined key challenges, including weak environmental laws, limited enforcement mechanisms, corruption, and restricted access to justice for many communities.

In a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today, Ms. Mwape, however, emphasised growing environmental awareness, international cooperation, and judicial reforms as opportunities to improve litigation outcomes.

Ms. Mwape also stressed the importance of building capacity among agencies and courts, raising public awareness, fostering collaboration, and pursuing strategic litigation to establish a just system that holds perpetrators of nature crimes accountable and ensures a safer environment.
