DMMU URGED TO PRIORITIZE PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN FLOOD AREAS

The Zambia Federation of Disability Organizations (ZAFOD) has called on the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to prioritize persons with disabilities in flood-prone areas, as they face heightened risks during emergencies.

ZAFOD Executive Director, Justine Bbakali, warned that individuals with disabilities are more vulnerable to drowning if left unassisted, as they may struggle to evacuate quickly when floods occur.

Speaking to RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Bbakali also raised concerns about the increased risk of waterborne diseases, as floodwaters often become contaminated with fecal matter.

“These floods pose a serious threat, not only through drowning but also by spreading diseases like cholera,” said Mr. Bbakali.

He further urged organizations within the Disability Movement to check on affected individuals and provide necessary support.

Additionally, Mr. Bbakali called on parents and guardians to ensure the safety of children with disabilities, cautioning against the harmful practice of locking them indoors without regular monitoring, especially in disaster-prone areas.
