Government has reaffirmed its commitment to adapting to the changes brought about by the United States’ 90-day global freeze on foreign aid.
The aid freeze, which took effect on January 20, 2025, was implemented through an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Presenting a Ministerial statement in Parliament today on the potential impact of the freeze on Zambia, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, disclosed that his ministry, in collaboration with the Ministries of Finance and National Planning, Health, Tourism, the Bank of Zambia, and other key institutions, held a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales to discuss on the matter.
“In order to meet the expectations of the American people, the U.S. government will, during this review period, decide whether to resume, modify, or terminate assistance,” said Mr. Haimbe.
He assured that as the 90-day freeze unfolds, both governments will closely monitor developments to ensure that essential services in Zambia are not compromised.
