Mining Expert, Phesto Musonda, has welcomed government’s plan to operationalize the Mining Regulation Commission, saying it will enhance the management, production, and beneficiation of mineral resources to benefit Zambian citizens.
According to a white paper review by the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, government also plans to formalize gold trading and establish mining centers aimed at curbing illegal mining activities across the country.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mr. Musonda said the establishment of marketing centers will help eliminate illegal mining activities, improve tax compliance among miners, and significantly contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), thereby boosting economic growth.
“The idea of establishing this regulatory authority is a move in the right direction as it will improve the working environment for miners,” said Mr. Musonda.
He further noted that the initiative will not only drive national development but also create thousands of jobs for the unemployed.
