Media Laison Committee (MLC) has welcomed the announcement to allow live public broadcasting of selected court proceedings, starting with the case of former President Edgar Lungu that will be broadcast live by the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).
The pending judgement on Mr. Lungu’s eligibility case will be aired live on the 10th of December 2024.
MLC Chairperson Ernest Chanda says this is a step in building transparency in the Judiciary and allowing Zambians to witness the dispensation of Justice.
“We further expect that beyond ZNBC other television and radio stations will be given opportunity to do live broadcasts of court proceedings,” said Mr. Chanda in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Mr. Chanda further added Zambia should not be comfortable watching other countries reclaim their right to promote majority rule in the promotion of participatory democracy.
He urged the media to grab this opportunity and ensure that there is professionalism and accuracy in the way court cases are reported.
Mr. Chanda urged media houses to ensure their court reporters are regularly capacitated in court reporting to avoid distortion.
