LUNGU ELIGIBILITY LIVE BROADCAST SHOWS TRANSPARENCY-KAWANA

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, says the live broadcast of court proceedings in selected cases of public interest, is in line with the principle of Open Justice, as agreed at the 10th  Policy Committee Meeting held in April this year.

Mr. Kawana was giving context to the expected live broadcast of the Edgar Lungu eligibility case judgment by the Constitutional Court, slated for 10th December, 2024.

He said the Chief Justice exercised his discretion to grant the National Broadcaster permission to broadcast live the delivery of the Constitutional Court’s judgment, the move he described  as a significant  step in enhancing public access to judicial proceedings.

Mr. Kawana said the National Broadcaster, ZNBC, will be the sole media outlet permitted to set up cameras in the courtroom and broadcast the proceedings live, while other media houses will be allowed to be present in the courtroom.

“Government believes this initiative will positively contribute to transparency and enhance public understanding of judicial processes, furthering our commitment to Open Justice,” said Mr. Kawana in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
