The Lusaka City Council (LCC) says that the construction of the new, ultra-modern Munyaule Market is progressing smoothly, with work now at 30 percent completion.
In 2019, the Council made the decision to lease Munyaule Market for 15 years to Kaddoura Construction Limited, under an agreement to build a modern market that would offer a better environment for the traders at the location.
In a statement issued to RCV News, LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba explained that the market, now renamed Big Mama’s Market, is situated along Lumumba Road in the Central Business District (CBD) and is being constructed at a total cost of US$8 Million and is expected to accommodate more than 2000 traders once it is completed.
“The construction works for the market commenced in April this year and is scheduled to be completed within 16 months,” said Ms. Mwamba.
She said the Local Authority is pleased with the progress of the market’s construction stating that it will simplify the collection of market levies, as traders will have designated spaces for their businesses, unlike the previous setup where some traders lacked fixed trading areas.
Ms. Mwamba said the new market will also feature modern sanitary facilities and improved waste management systems, which will help enhance hygiene and reduce congestion.
