ADEG CONCERNED WITH LOW VOTER TURNOUT IN BY-ELECTIONS

Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation (ADEG) in Kabwe has expressed concern over the voter apathy that characterized the Lukanga Ward by-elections, where only 692 out of 3,948 registered voters cast their ballots.

ADEG say this low turnout is unhealthy for democracy, which flourishes with full participation from the people.

In a statement to RCV News today, Organization Central Province Coordinator, Yona Mbewe, said the low voter turnout in by-elections entails that voters are feeling disconnected from the political process or they lack trust in elected officials.

“It is important to interrogate factors contributing to this issue,” advised Mr. Mbewe.

Mr. Mbewe also blamed lack of intensive civic education for the low voter turnout, saying insufficient information about the voting process means lack of knowledge on the importance of participation.

He has since called for heightened civic and voter sensitization to educate citizens about the voting process and its importance.

Mr. Mbewe further urged stakeholders to reflect on the by-election and implement measures to address the situation to promote a strong democratic dispensation where citizens can actively participate in the electoral process and hold elected leaders accountable.
