The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board has awarded additional student loans to 573 eligible students across five universities.
The Loans Committee, chaired by Mercy Ngoma, approved the loans during a meeting held on September 25, 2024.
Board Manager Corporate Communications and Customer Services, Chiselwa Kawanda, says the board has awarded 247 loans to returning students that applied for a change of status from self-funding to the boards support at Mulungushi University.
“The board has also awarded loans to 174 students who appealed for consideration at Kwame Nkrumah University,” said Ms. Kawanda in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
She said that 126 students received additional loans at Chalimbana University while 26 students were awarded loans at Palabana University.
Ms. Kawanda said that one applicant upgraded their loan from 75% to 100%, due to financial constraints in covering the remaining 25% at Kapasa Makasa University.
She said that the additional loans have been funded through internal savings, with some awards replacing students who either declined the offer or opted for part-time studies.
