Opposition United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) Leader, Charles Chanda, has called for urgent reforms aimed at redefining the powers associated with the presidency.
Mr. Chanda’s remarks come amidst ongoing debates around the concentration of power within the executive branch of government.
He said the current framework allows for an excessive accumulation of authority in the hands of the president, which he said can lead to potential abuses and disregard for democratic principles.
“It is crucial that we establish a system where the presidency is respected as an institution, rather than allowing it to be overshadowed by the whims of the individual currently in office,” said Mr. Chanda.
Mr. Chanda proposed a series of reforms that include limiting executive powers, enhancing checks and balances, and ensuring more robust parliamentary oversight.
He said the country’s democracy must be protected by ensuring that power is not only in the hands of one person but is shared and accountable.
And Mr. Chanda urged Zambians to engage in discussions about the future of the country’s leadership framework.
