The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has engaged a contractor to extend the Chingwere Cemetery in response to the critical shortage of burial space.
LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager, Nyambe Bulumba says Lusaka is currently facing a severe shortage of burial space, placing the local authority in a challenging position.
Mr. Bulumba said the contractor has commenced work, levelling the seven surrounding hills to create additional burial plots.
“The expansion at Chingwere Cemetery will significantly extend its lifespan, providing much-needed relief as the council continues to seek a long-term solution for the city’s burial needs,” said Mr. Bulumba in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Mr. Bulumba added that the Local Authority is committed to closely monitoring the contractor to ensure high-quality work, preventing floods and other potential issues at the site.
