Chief Mailo of the Lala people of Serenje District, Central Province, has vowed to work closely with government to end property grabbing in his chiefdom, which leaves widows and orphans vulnerable and homeless.
The Traditional Leader explained that the practice typically occurs when relatives of the deceased seize property, disregarding the rights of the surviving family members.
He highlighted the severe consequences, including financial instability, emotional distress, and social displacement for the victims.
Chief Mailo emphasized that property grabbing is illegal in Zambia, as the Intestate Succession Act and the Wills and Administration of Testate Estates Act were enacted to protect the rights of heirs and ensure fair distribution of a deceased person’s estate.
He made the remarks in Nsomaulwa during a tour of his chiefdom, in an exercise locally known as Umulondo.
The Lala Chief committed to joining stakeholders in educating the community about the legal rights of widows and orphans and the importance of having a will to prevent property grabbing.
“The chiefdom will also utilize traditional courts to resolve disputes related to property grabbing”, said Chief Mailo.
