The Police Public Complaints Commission (PPCC) has recorded 68 complaints against police conduct for the second quarter of 2024, a rise from the 46 complaints received in the first quarter.
The complaints came from eight of the ten provinces with Lusaka recording the highest number with 51 complaints, followed by Central with 5, and Southern and Eastern with 3 each.
Western and Copperbelt reported 2 each, while Northwestern and Northern had 1 each.
PPCC Chairperson Zunga Siakalima told RCV News in a statement that no complaints were reported from Muchinga and Luapula Provinces between April and June 2024.
Mr. Siakalima said in the period under review, the nature of the complaints includes 14 Unlawful arrests and over detention, 11 discreditable conduct, 11 police inaction, 10 cases of unprofessional conduct among others.
“Sadly, the Commission recorded 10 cases of extra judicial killings between April and June and the same number was recorded in the first quarter, January to march, 2024 bringing the total to 20”, said Mr. Siakalima.
Meanwhile, Mr. Siakalima said various sensitization programs are being executed to inform the public of their rights and responsibilities.
He has urged the public to report any unethical or illegal police behavior, as the Commission is responsible for investigating such complaints.
He has further called on Police to conduct themselves professionally in their course of duty.
