Opposition Forum for Democracy and Development Leader, Edith Nawakwi, has been detained in Lusaka today, for the offence of seditious practices.
Police Public Relations Officer, Rea Hamoonga, who confirmed that Ms. Nawakwi remains in custody, said the offence of Seditious Practices is a serious matter as it involves actions intended to incite rebellion against the authority of the state.
Mr. Hamoonga in a statement issued in Lusaka today that Police recorded a warn and caution statement on Ms. Nawakwi.
He said Ms. Nawakwi will appear in court soon to face the charges brought against her.
And Mr. Hamoonga called on the public to remain calm and refrain from making statements that could lead to unrest or speculation.
“The Zambia Police Service will continue to carry out its duties impartially and with integrity to ensure that justice is served,” assured Mr. Hamoonga.
Meanwhile, speaking to journalists at Ms. Nawakwi’s residence this morning, opposition Golden Party of Zambia leader Jackson Silavwe said his party is concerned with the current happenings in the political space.
