President Hakainde Hichilema says fertilizer should be available and affordable to farmers, if the intended objective to increase productivity and secure food for the vulnerable on the continent is to be achieved.
Mr. Hichilema said this during the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit in Kenya today.
“If fertilizer is not affordable, the food produced will be expensive,” said Mr. Hichilema.
He has since called on African countries to invest and increase capacity of producing fertilizer by using raw materials available and not to depend on other countries outside the continent to supply the commodity.
Meanwhile, President Hichilema said the loss of lives, property and dislocation of people due to food insecurity, drought and floods on the continent is regrettable.
He said there is need to urgently address climate change.
