Minister of Information and Media Cornelius Mweetwa says reports that government has continued to infringe on the freedom of speech among opposition politicians are false.
Mr. Mweetwa, who is also Chief Government Spokesperson, says politicians are free to air out their views as long as they are within the law.
Speaking when European Union Head of Delegation to Zambia, Ambassador Karolina Stasiak, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Lusaka today, Mr. Mweetwa said that government is open to opposing views on national matters.
“Politicians are also free to use public media to air their opposing views but should be done within the law”, said Mr. Mweetwa.
Speaking during the same meeting, EU Head of Delegation to Zambia Ambassador Karolina Stasiak commended the Zambia government on the efforts it has made to preserve media freedom.
Ms. Stasiak said that the freedom of the media is one of the tenets of a democratic society.
