Centre for Trade Policy and Development, CTPD, says the ongoing climatic adversities present an opportunity for Zambia to leverage its geographical advantage and rich underground water resources, to bolster agricultural productivity and enhance intra-regional trade, especially under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
CTPD Research Associate- Trade and Investment, Brivery Siamabele, says Zambia’s potential in transforming its agricultural landscape through strategic investments in irrigation could reposition the nation as a food basket for the region.
In a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today, Dr. Siamabele said Zambia stands on the brink of an agricultural revolution if the country utilizes the approximately 42 million hectares of uncultivated arable land.
“By mobilizing rural households into cooperatives and supporting them with the necessary technical, financial, and mechanical resources, Zambia could achieve year-round agricultural production including the production of winter maize,” said Dr. Siamabele.
He said the irrigation initiative not only promises to sustain the country’s food security but also repositions it as a key player in the AfCFTA as well as a food basket in the region.
