The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has issued a stern warning to illegal miners operating in the Hippo Pool area of Chingola and Chililabombwe in Copperbelt Province, highlighting the serious environmental hazards posed by their activities along the Kafue River.
This follows an inspection conducted along the riverbanks in both districts, where ZEMA discovered significant disturbances to the watercourse, increased water turbidity, and potential threats to water quality, biodiversity, and the broader ecosystem.
In a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today, ZEMA Corporate Affairs Manager Ruth Kamwi, ordered all individuals and companies engaged in unauthorised mining activities in the area to halt operations immediately.
“Failure to comply with environmental regulations will result in swift action, including penalties and prosecution.” said Ms. Kamwi.
She has since urged all stakeholders to report any further instances of illegal mining activities to ZEMA.
