A police officer in Solwezi district of North Western Province has shot dead his wife and her stepbrother before taking his own life in a suspected domestic dispute.
The incident occurred around 05:30 hours today in the Low-Density area of Solwezi.
North-Western Province Police Commissioner Brighton Siwale confirmed the incident saying that the officer, Funkuta Muyembi, 46, stationed at Solwezi Central Police Station, fatally shot his wife Womba Samulozela, 41, and her stepbrother Dr. Wanna Samulozela, 42, a recently transferred medical officer, before turning the gun on himself.
“All three bodies were found in the same room, two on the floor and one partially on the bed,” said Mr. Siwale.
Mr. Siwale said Muyembi had drawn a police-issued AK-47 rifle earlier that morning under the pretext of attending to a case, adding that he allegedly used a spare key to enter the house and carried out the attack.
He further revealed that the couple had reportedly separated on July 30 following marital issues and the home is believed to belong to the wife.
Mr. Siwale said that the bodies have been taken to Solwezi General Hospital mortuary for postmortem and burial.
