The Commuter Rights Association of Zambia (CRAZ) and the Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) have expressed disappointment with the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and public transport operators, for failing to implement proposed reductions in bus fares over the past three months.
ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala, said stakeholders have consistently advocated for fare adjustments in line with the steady reduction in fuel prices but both RTSA and transport operators have failed to respond appropriately.
Mr. Sakala questioned why the approved fare reductions have not been fairly and fully implemented, stating that the minimal K1 reduction recently announced falls short of the expectations and calculations made over the past three months.
“The K1 reduction is not what stakeholders have called for, the months of May and June also warranted fare decreases, yet these were completely ignored,” said Mr. Sakala in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
The two associations have described the continued refusal to adjust fares as “selfish” and “bordering on economic sabotage,” accusing transport operators of undermining government efforts to reduce the cost of living for ordinary Zambians.
Mr. Sakala has demanded urgent action from RTSA and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics to investigate the matter and ensure that the responsible parties are held accountable.
