NAQEZ SAYS MP’S UNFAIR ON CIVIL SERVANTS

The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has expressed disappointment over the National Assembly’s decision to reject a motion to reintroduce the debt swap initiative for civil servants.

The motion, presented on Wednesday, 11th July 2025, was rejected on grounds of financial unsustainability.

But Speaking in an interview with RCV News, NAQEZ Executive Director, Aaron Chansa, said the decision is a setback for many civil servants, particularly teachers, who are struggling under the burden of debt amid the rising cost of living.

“Most teachers are barely surviving due to overwhelming debt, making it difficult for them to adequately provide for their families, especially with the current high cost of living,” said Dr. Chansa.

He called on government to explore alternative ways of easing the financial pressure on civil servants and ensuring they have sufficient resources to sustain themselves despite any debts incurred.

Dr. Chansa also urged the government to prioritize paying teachers their outstanding entitlements, including settling-in allowances and upgrade-related arrears, as a practical measure to support them during these challenging times.
