Agriculture Expert Oliver Bulaya has backed the move by the government to increase the compensation package for farmers affected by Sino Metals pollution.
Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo earlier announced that farmers whose crops were affected by Sino-Metals pollution will now receive a three-year compensation package, an increase from the one-year compensation previously announced.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Dr. Bulaya commended the move saying this is what should be done looking at the extent of the damage.
“Effects of the pollution entails that farmers will not be able to produce anything in the coming seasons, therefore the compensation will help famers sustain their needs’, said Dr. Bulaya.
Dr. Bulaya has urged government to ensure that the affected area is continuously monitored and supported in soil recovery and water in preparation for use by the farmers.
He has advised the farmers to use the money wisely, perhaps diversifying in other farming activities for sustenance.
