Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, says government has made significant progress in implementing a demerit point system aimed at improving road safety and promoting responsible driving.
Speaking in the National Assembly yesterday, Mr. Tayali said the initiative is intended to deter drivers who engage in misconduct on the roads.
“This measure will help address the rising number of road traffic accidents caused by reckless driving and drivers found in violation of traffic laws will have their points reduced, and those who fall below a set threshold will be required to undergo retraining,” said Mr. Tayali.
Mr. Tayali also expressed concern over the competence of some drivers on Zambian roads, questioning how certain individuals obtained their driving licenses.
The Minister further pointed to a lack of supervision and oversight by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) over driving schools as a contributing factor to the presence of unqualified drivers.
