ZMA CALLS FOR HEALTH SYSTEM OVERHAUL AMIDST AID CUT

The Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) has called for an overhaul of the country’s medicine procurement, storage, and distribution systems following the suspension of $50 million in U.S. medical aid.

ZMA President, Kaumba Tolopu, emphasized the need to modernize the entire medical supply chain, calling for digital transformation to enhance accountability and transparency across all stages, from procurement to delivery.

Dr. Tolopu said this in Lusaka today, when he featured on Christian Voice’s Chatback program on the topic, “Implications of reduced US Funding to the health sector”.

“This cancer behind the pilferage of drugs is not only at distribution by health practitioners, it also borders down to procurement and storage,” said Dr. Tolopu.

Dr. Tolopu said that there is need for the nation to embrace a digital and tightly monitored process to restore donor confidence and protect the integrity of  the health system.
