ZAMBIA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO WHO’S GLOBAL EPILEPSY PLAN

Minister of Health, Elijah Muchima, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP) on Epilepsy and other Neurological Disorders, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

He said the framework will guide efforts to strengthen the programming and delivery of epilepsy services across Zambia.

Dr. Muchima noted that the Ministry of Health continues to invest in building the capacity of healthcare workers through specialized training in the management of epilepsy and related seizure conditions.

“Epilepsy has been integrated into Zambia’s National Standard Treatment Guidelines, providing healthcare workers with accessible information for effective clinical care,” said Dr. Muchima.

The Minister also emphasized the ongoing collaboration with local chapters of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), the International League Against Epilepsy, and the Epilepsy Association of Zambia.

These partnerships, he said, are critical in raising community awareness, combating stigma, and promoting health-seeking behavior among individuals living with epilepsy.

Dr. Muchima made the remarks in Lusaka today following a courtesy call by officials from IBE, the Zambia League Against Epilepsy, and the Epilepsy Association of Zambia.

Meanwhile, IBE Chief Executive Officer Donna Walsh commended the Ministry of Health for its continued support toward people living with epilepsy.

She called for stronger partnerships between the government and affected communities, emphasizing the need for inclusive health policies and intensified public education.

Ms. Walsh reiterated IBE’s commitment to improving the social conditions and quality of life for individuals with epilepsy and their caregivers.
