ZAMBIA PLEDGES ADDITIONAL TROOPS AND EQUIPMENT TO UN MISSIONS

Zambia has pledged an additional Military Police Company, two Platoons of Mixed Engagement Teams, a Medium Utility Helicopter Unit, and an Air Ambulance to support United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The announcement was made during the recently concluded 2025 United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference held in Berlin, Germany.

Leading the Zambian delegation, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu, made the pledge on behalf of Zambia during the pledging session of the high-level meeting.

Speaking on behalf of Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma, Mr. Haamaundu highlighted the importance of strategic investments in UN peacekeeping operations, calling on member states to enhance support for UN Police, fully implement the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, and responsibly leverage emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve operational efficiency and transparency.

He emphasized the growing impact of the climate crisis on global security and conflict dynamics, noting that this challenge must be addressed urgently.

“Greener and safer peacekeeping is a fundamental necessity and equally important is the ability to communicate strategically, counter misinformation, and foster trust with the communities served,” said Mr. Haamaundu in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today by Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer, Paul Shalala.

Mr. Haamaundu further stressed that peacekeeping efforts cannot succeed in isolation, reaffirming Zambia’s commitment to enhanced collaboration with regional organizations, in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719.
