GOV’T REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO UPHOLDING PRESS FREEDOM

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an enabling and responsive environment that supports media freedom and upholds freedom of expression.

Speaking during a pre-commemoration event ahead of World Press Freedom Day, which will be observed on May 3, 2025, under the theme Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Media, Bernard Domingo, commended the media for its critical role in informing the public and holding those in power accountable.

“The theme could not be more timely, as Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer the stuff of science fiction but a powerful force already reshaping how information is produced, disseminated, and consumed,” said Mr. Domingo.

He noted that while AI presents significant opportunities for the media to enhance its reach and capabilities, it also carries risks.

Mr. Domingo emphasized that freedom of expression and access to information are not optional luxuries but constitutional rights that must be safeguarded, particularly in the digital age.

He called on stakeholders to equip journalists with the skills necessary to responsibly utilize AI, and further urged media practitioners to take the lead in educating the public on how to critically navigate today’s complex digital information landscape.
