LACK OF GBV AWARENESS FUELLING RISE IN CASES

Families Are Nations Executive Director, Judith Mwila, says a lack of information and awareness on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) among community members remains a key factor driving the rise in GBV cases across Zambia.

Zambia recorded 11,177 GBV cases in the first quarter of 2025, up from 9,700 cases during the same period in 2024, highlighting a worrying upward trend.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News, Mrs. Mwila expressed concern over the situation and emphasized the urgent need for intensified community sensitization campaigns.

“Once community members are aware and knowledgeable, they will be able to identify GBV and take action by reporting it,” said Mrs. Mwila.

Mrs. Mwila, however, expressed optimism, noting that the increase in reported cases could also be a sign that more people are beginning to recognize and speak out against the vice.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Mwila called on the government to revisit some provisions under the Anti-GBV Act, particularly those relating to the granting of bail to offenders.

She argued that some perpetrators are exploiting the legal system to continue committing the same crimes.
