GOV’T CONFIRMS ECL BATTLING CANCER IN SOUTH AFRICA

Government has confirmed that former Republican President, Edgar Lungu, is battling cancer and recently underwent chemotherapy treatment in South Africa.

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, says the former head of state is responding well to treatment and urged Zambians to pray for his continued recovery.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Kawana said that Mr. Lungu is awaiting a medical review to determine whether he will return home or continue with further chemotherapy sessions in South Africa.

“Zambians are therefore called upon to pray for Mr. Lungu and allow him time to rest, away from political discussions,” said Mr. Kawana.

He further revealed that President Hakainde Hichilema is in constant communication with the former president, offering words of encouragement and support during this difficult period.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kawana refuted claims that government is blocking the medical evacuation of former Kasama Central Member of Parliament, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM), who is currently admitted at Maina Soko Medical Centre.

He clarified that Mr. Mwamba is serving a prison sentence and, if evacuated for treatment, would be required to travel with a prison warden.

Mr. Kawana added that the Zambian Government has already requested clearance for his evacuation and is now awaiting formal approval from the South African authorities.
