1 IMPRISONED, WHILE 19 ARRESTED FOR ZESCO VANDALISM

ZESCO Limited has announced that it has arrested 19 people and convicted one person through the courts of law for vandalism across the country.

ZESCO Spokesperson, Matongo Maumbi, says this is part of efforts to curb vandalism and theft of ZESCO equipment.

Mr. Maumbi says in the conviction case, Morgan Mupeka, 18, of Isoka was apprehended on July 12, 2024 with 26 meters of stolen copper cable valued at K 1,211.60.

“Following his arrest by ZESCO Security in coordination with local law enforcement, Mupeka was tried in the Isoka Subordinate Court and 3 witnesses testified against him, leading to him being found guilty on 25 September 2024 and his subsequent sentencing to 18 months’ imprisonment,” said Mr. Maumbi in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He said that ZESCO remains committed to collaborating with law enforcement agencies and local communities to reduce the crimes and safeguard Zambia’s energy infrastructure.

Mr. Maumbi said that the conviction and arrests are part of ZESCO’s ongoing efforts to combat the widespread vandalism affecting its infrastructure, with security forces intensifying operations in recent weeks.
