ZRA RECOVERS OVER ONE MILLION EVADED TAX

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has recovered over One million, Four Hundred Ninety-Three Thousand Kwacha from Stephane Mining Imports and Exports Limited, in evaded tax case.

This comes after the Economic and Financial Crimes Court in Kitwe sentenced and convicted Stephane Mining Imports and Exports Limited, for the offence of making false representation, contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

ZRA Senior Corporate Communications Officer, Harriet Mwiinga, says facts of the case are that Stephane Mining Imports and Exports Limited, on dates unknown but between 1st January, 2024 and 30th March, 2024 in Kitwe, jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown, did make false representations to the ZRA.

She said this was  by declaring on bills of entry that Zinc concentrate was exported out of Zambia when in fact it was Zinc Ore which was exported, thereby defrauding government over K1.4M.

“The 6 trucks laden with Zinc Ore were intercepted by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA),” said Ms. Mwiinga in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

She said the mining firm informed the court that they wanted to invoke the provisions of the Plea Negotiations when the case came up for plea and commencement of trial on 5th September, 2024, and that the state did not object, provided the accused paid in full, the evaded taxes.

“Cases of Making false representation are on the rise, and the Zambia Revenue Authority has since strengthened its monitoring mechanisms to detect tax fraud,” said Ms. Mwiinga.
