ZESCO Limited says it has recorded a K5.7 million loss in November 2024 due to vandalism, a decrease from K7.1 million recorded in October.
The Power utility company says the decrease is due to intensified recovery efforts by both the community and law enforcement agencies.
Speaking during an end of year media briefing in Lusaka today, ZESCO Acting Managing Director Justine Loongo said in November alone, 67 suspects were apprehended for vandalism and 9 convictions were secured.
“Vandalism continues to pose a substantial threat to Zambia’s energy infrastructure, resulting in frequent power outages and huge financial losses,” said Mr. Loongo.
Mr. Loongo further said the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Youth, Sport & Arts to address thefts of ZESCO service cables, which remains a pressing issue, impacting both domestic customers and critical services.
He has urged the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to ensure a secure energy future.
