Former Minister of Energy, Yamfwa Mukanga, has called on ZESCO Limited not to be in a hurry to review the Emergency Electricity Tariffs.
Reacting to the announcement by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) that ZESCO will review the Emergency Electricity Tariffs this week, Mr. Mukanga welcomed the move, however, said the utility company should have waited until it was able to provide sufficient electricity to the people.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Mukanga said that it would be pointless for ZESCO to review the emergency tariffs when it is not providing sufficient power to the people of Zambia, which has affected many businesses that depend on electricity to function.
“Reviewing tariffs is not a bad idea for as long as it is not adjusted upwards which will affect the people of Zambia more”, said Mr. Mukanga.
Meanwhile Mr. Mukanga has expressed concern that Zambia is still facing energy deficits despite the announcement by government that by July, power supply will stabilize
He has since called on the government to stop exporting electricity at the expense of Zambians but rather direct ZESCO to increase the hours of energy supply.
