Government has advised Zambians living in the United States without valid immigration status, to voluntarily return home in order to avoid potential legal challenges and ensure a dignified return home.
This follows the recent announcement by the United States government of several key measures aimed at strengthening border protection and enforcing its immigration laws and regulations.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, government has also urged Zambians in the U.S. who possess valid documentation to strictly comply with all applicable immigration laws.
The ministry emphasized that every Zambian living abroad or planning to travel should be fully aware of and adhere to the immigration regulations of their host countries.
The ministry cautioned that violations of immigration laws not only affect an individual’s legal status, but also risk tarnishing Zambia’s international reputation and in some cases, such violations may lead to broader policy consequences that could negatively impact the wider Zambian community abroad.
“All Zambians in the Diaspora are encouraged to maintain valid immigration status and ensure that such status remains unviolated at all times,” read the advisory note.
Furthermore, the ministry advised Zambians intending to travel abroad to stay informed and up to date with immigration laws and requirements of their intended destinations.
The government also reminded Zambians in the Diaspora that all inquiries and applications for Zambian national documents of identity must be processed through Zambian embassies and high commissions in their respective host countries.
