In a significant step towards bolstering Zambia’s fight against corruption, key stakeholders convened today at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre for the Validation Meeting of the Draft Anti-Corruption Bill of 2025.
ACC Board Chairperson, Justice Evans Hamaundu, emphasized that the Bill aims to strengthen the Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012 by addressing emerging challenges in combating corruption.
“A robust legal framework is crucial for promoting economic growth, reinforcing accountability, and fostering ethical business practices,” said Justice Hamaundu.
He further noted that the draft Bill seeks to enhance collaboration among law enforcement agencies, tighten asset declaration processes, and introduce stricter measures against bribery and abuse of office.
And Ministry of Justice Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Isabelle Lemba, reaffirmed government’s commitment to an inclusive consultative process, ensuring the legislation reflects the aspirations of the Zambian people.
She urged stakeholders to scrutinize the draft provisions to guarantee a practical and effective law.
Meanwhile, Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) Executive Director, Maurice Nyambe, echoed these sentiments, acknowledging Zambia’s progress in the 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index but cautioning that corruption remains deeply entrenched.
He called on the government to fully domesticate the United Nations Convention against Corruption and strengthen public service transparency.
The meeting is expected to refine the Bill before its presentation to Parliament for enactment.
