ZACA OPPOSES PLANED ELECTRICITY HIKES

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has opposed plans by government through ZESCO to increase electricity traffics as part the drought response plan.
Last Week, Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, announced that the current ZESCO tariffs were insufficient to meet the cost of power imports, adding that government is consulting with various stakeholders to design a tariff mechanism that allows the utility company to recover its cost during the drought response period.
But speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala, said government should sacrifice and use state coffers to meet the insufficient import power costs as opposed to subjecting consumers to high electricity tariffs.
“Zambians are already facing tough economic conditions and increasing the electricity tariffs will worsen the cost of living”, said Mr. Sakala.
