The Zambia Consumer Association ZACA has called on local authorities including the Lusaka city council, law enforcement agencies and Ministry of Health to intensify efforts in curbing the illegal production, distribution and sale of Kachasu.
ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala, says there is need for Strict enforcement of existing liquor licensing laws to ensure that alcohol sold to the public meets safety and quality standards.
Mr. Sakala has also called for community sensitization through educating the public about the health risks associated with consuming an illicit brew like Kachasu.
“ZACA is deeply concerned about the proliferation of illegal kachasu on the streets of Lusaka especially along freedom way and middle road, and this trend not only poses significant health risks to consumers but also undermines the enforcement of existing laws and regulations which aims at protecting public safety,” said Mr. Sakala in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka.
He said that kachasu is often produced under the unhygienic conditions lacking quality control measures which exposes Consumers to harmful substances.
