ZACA CONCERNED WITH AFLATOXIN IN MAIZE MEAL

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) says revelations by the ministry of health that some Mealie Meal products contain aflatoxin needs serious attention from government.

ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala, says although the immediate effects of aflatoxin on humans may not be as apparent, it is well-documented that prolonged exposure to the toxins can cause severe liver damage and increase the risk of liver cancer.

Mr. Sakala has therefore urged consumers to remain vigilant and Report any Suspicious Illnesses.

“If Consumers have any concerns about the quality of dog food or maize, meal, they must refrain from using them until further notice,” said  Mr. Sakala in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He said that ZACA is working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the extent of the contamination and ensure that the affected products are promptly removed from the market.

Mr. Sakala has also urged manufacturers and retailers to prioritize consumer safety by conducting thorough quality checks and withdrawing any suspicious products from their shelves.
