YWCA SUPPORTS DNA

The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) has expressed support for recent court remarks advocating for Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) tests as the most reliable method for resolving paternity disputes.

Zambian courts have recently handled a series of complex paternity cases, particularly those involving deceased alleged fathers. In such cases, the courts have had to request DNA tests between the child and a close living relative of the deceased to establish biological ties.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, YWCA Executive Director, Patricia Mubanga, emphasized the importance of women providing truthful information regarding the paternity of their children.

She cautioned against attempts to exploit families financially through false paternity claims, especially in cases where the alleged father is deceased.

Ms. Mubanga also urged married individuals to uphold moral integrity and avoid extramarital affairs to prevent such disputes.

Furthermore, she advised that courts should only consider DNA tests involving individuals whose genetic link to the deceased was previously established to avoid ruling on cases based on mismatched results.

DNA testing should be normalized in our society, and there is a need for increased awareness about its significance,” said Mubanga.
